In customer discussions about new projects – often at the first contact – we are often asked: What price does e-learning or video production have for you? What are the costs of e-learning as a client? Based on our experience with past projects, we can usually give an approximate price framework for production as early as the initial interview. In this article, you’re reading how to calculate prices for video and e-learning projects and what factors influence the price.
The cost of e-learning in line with the industry
If you compare prices between different vendors, which is generally recommended, you will find that the cost of producing e-learning can vary widely and may vary widely depending on the vendor and product. This is not surprising, because the different production variants and formats involve different expenses in the creation.
The eLearning BENCHMARKING study (more information) has different variants of e-learning in three different groups, so-called “Level” to make them more comparable:
- Level 1: Easier training opportunities without the use of interactions or media. For example, this can be text- or slide-based.
- Level 2: Learning units with extensive interaction by the learners (e.g. through practice tasks, quizzes or case studies) and media (such as graphics, animations, or videos)
- Level 3: Learning units with complex interactions or simulations or extensive videos and animations
The cost of producing these formats is given with a wide range in the study, for which around 2,500 training managers from companies and organisations in the DACH region as well as e-learning professionals were interviewed.
Approximate average cost of producing e-learning according to the study for a one-hour learning program (1 so-called “Learning Lesson”):
- Level 1: between 1,000 – 5,000 euros
- Level 2: between 5,000 – 20,000 euros
- Level 3: between 10,000 – 20,000 euros and in some cases significantly above
It should be mentioned that the price range in the survey is very far apart for all three variants, so you will find cheaper or more expensive suppliers in each price range.
Are expensive e-learning formats automatically better?
No. The most complex and expensive e-learning program is of no use if it is not (voluntarily) worked out by the learners and they do not benefit from the tutorial in a practical way for your daily work.
The complexity of an e-learning programme, the number of graphics or animations or the level of interaction alone do not guarantee that participants will achieve learning success from the programme, acquire new skills and acquire the investment for the client. Expect.
The complexity of the e-learning programme must be adapted to the learning objectives of the participants and the objectives of the organisation, be presented attractively, i.e. with a benefit to the participants, and be usable with low barriers to access.
How to get started with e-learning economically
If you are planning to start e-learning with your company and if your organisation has little to no experience with this form of continuing training, it often makes sense to create a clearly defined pilot project for a specific training need and a group of participants and to test e-learning over a limited period of several months. We have gained very good experience with this approach, especially when the need is multi-faceted and at the beginning there is no orientation about the possibilities and our own assessment measures.
Our recommendation: Start lean and long-term flexible with a pilot project
With the help of an e-learning pilot project, you and your employees can gain experience with the medium of e-learning and develop a digital training culture in your company. Pilot projects can usually be implemented with manageable budgets and above all without long-term financial obligations in expensive software systems or supply contracts.
E-learning projects are economically
The cost-effectiveness of concrete e-learning projects can very well be mapped as a return-on-investment calculation and can be used as a basis for decision-making for further steps. On request, we accompany the implementation of such a pilot project from conception to evaluation in an advisory capacity, without you being bound by our production or our software systems.
Cost of e-learning at the neokom.tv video and e-learning agency
As an owner-managed agency, we are involved in the production of atractive video-based tutorials in the form of video trainings, training and explanatory videos with interactive exercises, but also of high-quality live e-learning formats such as webinars for sales and marketing purposes or web conferences and live online seminars. These formats are predominantly at Level 2 in terms of their complexity and level of interaction, and in some cases level 1. In addition, we also offer our customers optionally a slim-based, web-based and mobile-optimized learning management system (LMS system) in which the learning videos and e-learning programs are kept and that the participants have a safe and simple access to the content.
Due to efficient production processes borrowed from live video production, we can often produce typical video-based training programs in a short time and with a manageable amount of effort, yet technically and in terms of content we can produce very demanding Results. We are therefore more in the lower middle of the study in terms of production costs compared to the above-mentioned cost framework in the study.
Typical new customer projects in our agency are, depending on the scope, in a price range between 2,500 – 15,000 euros and are rolled out within a few weeks. In the case of follow-up projects or Continuations can often be built on existing projects, which is why average prices and roll-out times tend to decrease.
